In 1970, Abbott returned to California, and settled first in San Francisco. She married Duncan Abbott, a banker, and in 1974, the couple moved to the Rincon area of southern California where they took over the running of the avocado and lemon ranch that had been in Abbott's family.

This setting with their restored Victorian home has become an inspiring place for Abbott's painting. She has a studio designed and built by her husband, and with high windows and natural light, it is modeled after the studio of Clarence Hinkle. However, she does not confine her subjects to that area as she travels throughout California, the Northwest, and on the East Coast including New Hampshire. She also paints studio still lifes.

She is also a conservation activist, and Abbott and her daughter, Whitney Brooks Abbott, participate in plein-air exhibitions.
